The IWA slide rule factory was founded in 1924 by E. Willi under the name Dipl.-Ing. E. Willi GmbH founded in Stuttgart and renamed IWA - Rechenschieberfabrik F. Riehle GmbH in 1926 under the partnership of Franz Riehle . In 1929 the company moved to Esslingen am Neckar . From 1964 the company is run by his son Harald Riehle . Riehle was president of the ASU (working group of self-employed entrepreneurs) for many years . The current company headquarters (as of August 17, 2018) is located in Denkendorf (Württemberg) and the company is managed by Franz Riehle as the second managing director alongside Harald Riehle.

The abbreviation IWA initially means engineering office for economic work, but later (from 1971) it was rededicated in information media, advertising media, work aids or information media, working aids, addvertising supports . The current English name is Information tools, Working aids, Advertising carriers .

In the beginning the data sliders were made of cardboard. But as early as 1925 plastic was also used, in some cases aluminum and brass.

Before the Second World War, around 10,000 slide bars were produced each year. Production rose to 100,000 units in the 1950s and 1.5 to 2 million per year in the late 1990s. In the period from the end of the Second World War to 1997, over 3800 different models were manufactured.

In addition to slide rules, the company also produced a number of board games in the 1970s:
