The IWL SR59 Berlin is a motor scooter that was built from 1959 to 1963 at VEB Industriewerk Ludwigsfelde . In an international comparison of the 150 series scooters, the Berlin scooter took a leading position when it appeared. With a total of almost 114,000 copies, it was the most built large scooter in the GDR . The successor model from 1963 is called Troll .

Differences to the predecessor SR56 Wiesel

Outwardly, the Scooter Berlin is very similar to its predecessor, the Wiesel . One difference is the use of individual seats instead of a bench. The rear hood also differs in details. The word "Berlin" with the Berlin coat of arms underneath is also striking. The technical differences are clearer. The fan-cooled engine was bored out to 150 cc. The increase in output to 5.5 kW (7.5 PS) was also achieved by increasing compression from 7.5 to 8.1, a larger intake cross-section and a new exhaust system. Despite the increased empty weight, the power- to- weight ratio was reduced to 24.5 kg / kW. Taken together with the four-speed transmission, the driving performance was significantly better than that of the Wiesel. There have also been some detail improvements: The air filter now draws in air from the open air, and no longer the dusty air under the hood. The carburetor has been modified for better suction noise suppression. The Wiesel's patented trapezoidal swing arm, in which the chain tension always remains the same during deflection, has been supplemented with a stabilizer. Suspension and driving characteristics could be improved by hydraulic shock absorbers and extended front suspension. The improved equipment included steering block and seat locks, side stands, folding hooks for hanging up shopping nets, etc. Accessories available included a windshield and the Campi single-track trailer .

Others

With a full 12 liter petrol tank, the Berlin scooter can travel around 375 km, which corresponds to an average petrol consumption of 3.2 liters / 100 km.

Other scooters available in the GDR at this time were the smaller Manet S100 and the larger Čezeta , as well as the small scooters from Simson and Jawa .

One curiosity is the DEFA documentary film Many Paths Lead to “Q” , which was broadcast in cinemas in 1961/1962 and suggests that the Berlin scooter has achieved the Q label as well as numerous improvements to the vehicle. In fact, the quality mark Q was not achieved, nor were the improvements presented implemented.
