The IWL SR56 Wiesel was a motor scooter model in the GDR . It was built from June 1956 to April 1959 at VEB Industriewerke Ludwigsfelde . The two-seater scooter has taken over the fan-cooled 123 cm³ engine (RM-125-2) with 5 hp from its predecessor Pitty , which came from the MZ 125 . The Wiesel had been built 57,400 times by 1959. In 1959 the Wiesel was replaced by the Berlin model.

Differences to the forerunner Pitty

Externally, when you compare it to the forerunner Pitty, you immediately notice the changed design of the front. The less sheet metal-intensive and modern-looking design of the Wiesel was primarily made to save material and weight. While the engine was taken over unchanged, new components such as the rear swing arm and torsion bar spring were used in the chassis. The new and patented trapezoidal swing arm ensured that the chain remained taut in every load condition of the vehicle. Only the front fork was taken over from the Pitty with a few changes. The bonnet mounting has been simplified, the battery has been made more accessible, the dashboard has been redesigned and better equipped. As a result of the new 12 liter tank, the range increased to 340 km. The 20 kg reduction in curb weight resulted in improved performance, and the top speed increased to 75 km / h.

Other properties

The friction-damped shock absorbers made it easier for the rear wheel to move on uneven ground. In addition, the mileage gain compared to the noticeably underpowered Pitty was not big enough. Both facts were met when creating the successor SR59 Berlin. When the MZ ES 175 appeared in 1957, the prospect of installing the 175 engine in the Wiesel was announced, but this did not take place until the Berlin model was introduced. After the appearance of the more powerful Berlin scooter, attempts were made to equip the Wiesel with the SR59 engine. However, this was and is only possible with extensive renovation work. As alternatives to the Wiesel, the larger Čezeta and the small scooters from Simson and Jawa were available in the GDR .
