I Hate Myself was an emo band from Gainesville, USA , which existed from 1996 to 1998 .

history

The emo band, founded in 1996 by the two brothers Jim and Jon Marburger and Steve Jin, was one of the most influential groups in the genre - especially in terms of the lyrics. In 1997 the band released their first half-page LP with four songs on the No Idea Records label. In addition to the 10-song LP in the same year, the band released two splits in 1998. In 1998 the band broke up; Posthumously, other records appeared, especially compilations with songs from earlier years.

At the end of the 1990s, the Marburger brothers founded the band Burnman, which was quickly disbanded. Drummer Jon Marburger then joined the band Gunmoll, which is also released on No Idea Records .

As such, I Hate Myself played a few shows again in their hometown of Gainesville in 2003. In 2005 the two brothers recorded three new songs. They also played in the band The Hope , whose first album was released in 2006.

In interviews, the band was critical of the youth fashion scene Emo and the associated post-hardcore and alternative rock bands. Jon said in an interview:

“[...] Now the word [Emo, CoR] bothers the hell out of me. It has come to signify the reemergence of 80's glam bands. It has lost the punk ideal it originally contained. These bands are in no way punk or diy. They area all about image, wealth and lazy songwriting. [...] i hate [The "emo" fashion]. Everyone likes to play dressup, but they get out of hand. I understand wanting to look different than the jocks and the squares but it seems that there is a lack of substance to the new fashion. And it seems awfully expensive. Also, it must take a lot of time to polish all of those rings and belt buckles. Maybe I am just jealous because I can't pull off swooping pink bangs with a lip piercing and woman's jeans. [...] ”

The author Tao Lin built the band into his book Eeee Eee Eeee . In this book the characters discuss the band and the songs and quote the lyrics.

style

Despite a remarkably unique sound, the style is considered typical of emo and, despite the relative geographical remoteness of the band in relation to other main expansion centers of music, such as Washington, DC , San Diego or New York , had a very strong effect on the following emo, but especially on screamo bands.

The band's 20 or so tracks almost all have no names, similar to other emo bands such as Indian Summer . An exception is the song Less Than Nothing , which appeared on the first half-page LP and was officially named on a later sampler.

On the author platform Everything2 you can read about the lyrics of the band:

“I Hate Myself, rising out of a scene that relied on cryptic lyrics and fragmentary liner notes, eagerly proclaiming their worthless lives, their desires to be accepted and loved, their utter hopelessness. It was a bit odd. Yet, while there are traces of humor in the bands work, the majority of it seems to be delivered entirely without irony. "
