He was arrested in Austria in 1943 and taken to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Upper Austria, where he was imprisoned until the camp was liberated by the Allies on May 5, 1945. He described the time shortly before the liberation and the following months in his novel Mauthausen , which was published in 2010 in German translation under the title Freedom came in May . In the German-speaking countries he was best known for the setting of his Mauthausen cantata by Mikis Theodorakis . Comment on arrest and deportation: When Iakovos Kambanellis wanted to travel to Switzerland via Austria, he was arrested due to his inadequate papers and after remand and interim camp was deported to Mauthausen concentration camp. He did not come to the concentration camp as a resistance fighter, as is often erroneously claimed, but only became one there.
