Ian Campbell (athlete)

Ian Campbell ( Ian Bernard Campbell; born April 18, 1957 ) is a former Australian triple jumper .

In 1978 he won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton , and in 1979 he was third in the World Athletics Cup in Montreal .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he finished fifth in a final with controversial judges' decisions. Both him and the third-placed Brazilian João Carlos de Oliveira were denied jumps that were further than the 17.35 m set up by the Soviet winner Jaak Uudmäe . In 2015, based on a new video analysis, the Australian Athletics Federation submitted an application to the IAAF to retrospectively declare Campbell's third attempt, which was estimated at 17.51 ​​m (+/- 2 cm), to be valid.

In 1979 he was Australian champion in the triple jump and 1980 in the long jump .
