Ian Carlos Gonçalves de Matos (born April 24, 1989 in Muaná , † December 21, 2021 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian water diver .

Life

Ian Matos was born in Muaná in 1989 and grew up in Belém . He started diving at the age of 17. He enrolled at the Universidade de Brasília to study pedagogy and trained in the Brazilian capital from then on.

2010 Matos was able to win three bronze medals at the South American Games in Medellín . This was followed by three participations in the Pan-American Games (2011, 2015 and 2019), two World Cup and Universiade participations as well as one participation in the World Cup . At the 2016 Summer Olympics , he and Luiz Outerelo took eighth place in synchronized jumping from the 3-meter board .

In 2014, Matos became one of the first Brazilian athletes to publicly acknowledge his homosexuality .

Matos died on December 21, 2021 at the age of 32 of complications from pneumonia in Rio de Janeiro.
