Ian G. Simmons

Ian Gordon Simmons (born January 22, 1937 in Ilford , London ) is a British geographer who taught at the University of Durham in England until his retirement . Through his contributions to environmental history, he also made significant contributions to prehistoric archeology.

His research interests include long-term effects of human environmental impact. A central theme for him is the late Mesolithic and early Neolithic in England and the effects of the Neolithic on today's landscape. Of particular note is his introduction to environmental history, published in 1993.

Career

Simmons studied at University College London in the late 1950s and received a bachelor's degree in 1959 and a doctorate in 1962 (Dr. phil.). After postdoctoral research in the United States at the University of California at Berkeley , he was a lecturer at the University of Durham from 1965 , becoming a senior lecturer in 1972 and a reader in 1976. In 1977 he took up his first professorship at the University of Bristol and returned to Durham in 1981 as a professor. After 1992, he was Vice-Chair of the Environmental Change Commission in the International Geographical Union and Chair of the Environment Working Group of the Institute for British Geographers. He was elected a member of the Academia Europaea in 1994 and a Fellow of the British Academy in 1997, and in 1998 he received the Victoria Medal of the Royal Geographical Society . In 2001 he retired. In 2005 the University of Aberdeen awarded him an honorary doctorate (D.Sc.).
