Strawberries & Marshmallows ( Japanese 苺 ま し ま ろ , Ichigo Mashimaro ) is a manga series by the Japanese illustrator Barasui , which was also implemented as an anime and an adventure game for the Playstation 2 . The everyday life of four elementary school students and one high school student, conceived as a comedy, is narrated in interconnected episodes. The manga's tagline is Kawaii wa, seigi! ( か わ い い は 、 正義! , Eng. "Cuteness is justice!").

action

Ichigo Mashimaro tells the story of four friends. These include Chika, the hyperactive Miu, the shy and tearful Matsuri and later also the little Englishwoman Ana Coppola, who pretends not to speak Japanese at school, although she has actually lived in Japan for a long time and has forgotten the English language. The only person over 12 years old in this anime is Chika's 16-year-old sister, Nobue Itō. She likes to drink beer and smokes a lot. She also has a thing for little girls in cosplay costumes. She should normally take on the role of a guardian, instead she plays and romps with the girls as much as she can. Together the five girls experience a lot of adventures and master their everyday lives in an innocent and cute way.

Characters

Nobue Itō ( 伊藤 伸 恵 , Itō Nobue )
She is 16 in the manga but 20 years old in the anime, often smokes a cigarette and for the girls she is something between big sister and mother. Say, she takes care of you. But sometimes it's the other way around. When she runs out of money, she comes to Chika and pokes at her.
Chika Itō ( 伊藤 千 佳 , Itō Chika )
Mostly called Chi , she is Nobue's little sister. She is 12 years old, in 6th grade and is quite serious and conscientious. Occasionally she even has to call Nobue to order when she's acting too childishly. According to Nobue, it is her quality not to have a special quality.
Miu Matsuoka ( 松岡 美 羽 , Matsuoka Miu )
She lives in the neighboring house, often comes to visit Chi and Nobue through the window and occasionally thinks up subtle nastiness to annoy her friends. In doing so, she always develops an amazing logic. She's quite athletic, very lively, and goes to class with Chi. She also teases Nobue to pique her interest.
Matsuri Sakuragi ( 桜 木 茉莉 , Sakuragi Matsuri )
She is 11, is in 5th grade and is very close friends with Chi and Miu. Since she is still very childlike, naive and easy to impress, she is a grateful victim for Mius' pranks. She is Ana's only classmate who knows Ana cannot speak English. By teaching Ana English, she speaks better English than Ana.
Ana Coppola ( ア ナ ・ コ ッ ポ ラ , Ana Koppora )
She is actually English, but has lived in Japan for so long that she can no longer speak English. She also knows a lot about Japanese tradition and likes Japanese food. But nobody should notice that. In Japanese, it roughly translates as “hole bone cave”. Understandably, Ana doesn't have the slightest interest in anyone finding out her family names. Miu takes a thieving pleasure to annoy her with it.

Publications

Manga

Strawberries & Marshmallows has been published in Japan since 2001 in individual chapters in the Manga magazine Comic Dengeki Daiō . The Media-Works- Verlag published these individual chapters in seven anthologies so far (as of May 2013).

The first four volumes in German were published by Tokyopop from 2005 to 2006 ; a continuation of the series is unlikely because of the longer break.

Anime

The production studio Daume adapted the manga as a 12-part anime series. The character design of the anime differed in some details from those of the manga. For example, Miu has braids and brown hair from the start, but in the manga she initially has black loose hair. Another change is that Nobue is 20 in the anime, while she is described as four years younger in the manga.

The series was broadcast from July to October 2005 on the Japanese television station TBS . The twelve episodes of the anime were around 23 minutes long and were supplemented by three additional episodes in 2007, which were released directly on DVD as original video animation (OVA). In 2009, two more episodes came out, about 27 minutes long, called Ichigo Mashimaro Encore ( 苺 ま し ま ろ encore).
