Ichkeul ( Arabic إشكل) is a 12,600 hectare national park in northern Tunisia , about 25 km southwest of the city of Bizerte .

The national park was established in 1980 primarily to protect endangered bird life and was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the same year . As a wetland , it is also under the protection of the Ramsar Convention . In 1996 it was classified as endangered due to its increasing salinity and therefore included in the Red List of World Heritage in Danger. In 2006 Ichkeul was removed from this list again.

Lake Ichkeul and its wetland are important stopping points on the flight line of hundreds of thousands of birds such as ducks , geese , storks and flamingos arriving in Tunisia over the Mediterranean Sea , which forage for food and build their nests here. Ichkeul is the last remaining river in a chain that used to stretch across North Africa .

The water that feeds Lake Ichkeul is also needed to supply the Tunisian population and is dammed in front of the lake.
