Life
Kohl comes from an old merchant family in Bremen. She was the daughter of the Bremen wine merchant Elard Kohl (1777-1830) and his wife Minna, b. Rumann (1786-1864). Ida had twelve siblings. After the father's death, the family had to give up their house on Sögestrasse . Kohl worked for some time in England as a governess in the 1830s. She was the sister of the travel writer Johann Georg Kohl , whom she accompanied on trips to France and England. Together with her brother she published the three-volume work English Sketches , which appeared in Leipzig in 1845. Around 1845 she published Paris and the French, also in three volumes, under her own name . She participated in the works Reisen in Scotland from 1844 and Reisen in England and Wales and Land und Menschen der British Isles von 1845.
In 1846 she married the Grand Duke of Oldenburg Chamberlain Count Hermann Wilhelm von Baudissin (born October 2, 1798, † May 13, 1891) in Freiburg . He brought three daughters with him from his first marriage. The couple had three children:
- Wolfgang Wilhelm Friedrich (born September 26, 1847 - † February 9, 1926)
- Agnes Luise Ottilie (born June 18, 1850 - † July 16, 1938)
- Hans Hermann Georg Adolf (* July 30, 1851; † 1911)
The family initially lived on their Sophiengut near Preetz and then moved to Freiburg. Her brother kept in touch and visited her in Freiburg. After his stay in Japan, he translated the work of Algernon Betram Freeman-Mitford Tales of Japan into German ( stories from old Japan from 1875) with her collaboration . After her death she published another novel.
