Idared is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ).

The Idared variety was bred in the USA around 1935 by the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station (IAES), which is part of the University of Idaho campus in Moscow (Idaho) . It has been available in stores since 1942. The variety is a cross between Jonathan and Wagener apple .

The tree forms a pyramidal crown with steep leading branches, the side branches can hang down. The leaves are relatively narrow. Flowering begins in the second half of April and lasts until the beginning of May. Idared is a good pollen donor. The yield starts early, is high and shows no alternation .

Idared is suitable for warmer locations and can also be grown in sheltered, sunny locations 500 meters above sea level. The variety is usually grafted to a frost-hardy master builder. Furthermore, strong fire blight and a susceptibility to powdery mildew and, to a lesser extent, scab can be observed.

The apples of the Idared variety are harvested from mid-October to early November. They are pressure-resistant and unproblematic in storage. It can be kept until the end of January, in the CA warehouse until June.

The fruits are medium to large in size and weigh around 140 g. The variety has a firm, crunchy and juicy, white pulp . The taste is slightly sour without much aroma. The basic color is yellow-green, the body color changes into dark to purple red. The shell is dotted.
