Idemitsu Kōsan KK ( Japanese 出 光 興 産 株式会社 , ~ Kabushiki-gaisha ) is a Japanese oil and energy company. It is Japan's second largest operator of oil refineries after Nippon Oil .

history

The company was founded in 1911 by Idemitsu Sazō as a trading company for petroleum products. As president until 1966 he had a decisive influence on the company. In 1957 the first refinery was completed in Tokuyama and in 1962 the Nisshō Maru, the world's largest oil tanker at the time, was put into service.

In July 2015, Idemitsu Kōsan undertook to buy 33% of the shares in Shōwa Shell . A non-binding agreement has also been signed to join forces. The founding family Idemitsu acquired shares in Showa Shell in 2016 to prevent a takeover.
