Igael Tumarkin ( Hebrew יגאל תומרקין; * October 23, 1933 in Dresden as Peter Martin Gregor Heinrich Hellberg) is a sculptor , land art artist and photographer living in Israel . He is known by the names Igael Tumarkin and Yigal Tumarkin .

Life

Igael Tumarkin is a son from the marriage of the actor Martin Hellberg with his wife Berta Gurewitsch. He immigrated to Israel with his mother when he was two years old. From 1951 to 1954 he did his military service in the Israeli army . He studied sculpture with the artist Rudi Lehmann . From 1955 to 1957 he worked as assistant to the set designer Karl von Appen at the Berliner Ensemble . From 1966 to 1967 he traveled to Europe, the USA, Africa and Australia.

Tumarkin's work is exhibited in many large museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in Haifa, the Haifa Museum of Art, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Tate Gallery in London. His large-format outdoor works include a. in Israel, the USA, on the Sinai peninsula and in Germany in Nuremberg ( Hommage à Dürer ).

In 2004 he was awarded the Israel Prize .

Tumarkin was married to Naama Tumarkin but divorced her in 2002. Their son, Yon Tumarkin, is a well-known Israeli actor.
