Ignacio Andrade Troconis (born July 31, 1839 in Mérida , † February 17, 1925 in Macuto) was an officer and politician and from February 20, 1898-19. October 1899 President of Venezuela . His election as president was suspected of fraud and there were numerous conspiracies and resistance movements against him.

Early years and career

His parents were General José Escolástico Andrade and Juana Troconis.

After his military training he was President of the State of Falcón from 1883 to 1885 and its Senator in 1886 . After a brief interlude as governor of the Federal District (the state of Caracas ), he became Minister of Education in 1893. As a member of Parliament and later President of Miranda , he was proposed as a candidate for government in the 1897 presidential election.

Presidency

In the secret direct election on September 1, he won by a large margin over José Manuel Hernández; however, this is viewed as electoral fraud . The ensuing tensions led to the " Revolución de Queipa ", an uprising led by Hernández with fights from February 23 to 12. June 1898.

During this rebellion, the former president and supporter Andrades Joaquín Crespo died (in a battle against Hernández), as a result of which many caudillos were turned against the president (including the war minister Ramón Guerra, who had just captured José Manuel Hernández).

In addition to these uprisings, the government also had to contend with economic problems and a smallpox epidemic, so that Andrade was overthrown on October 19, 1899 by Cipriano Castro (in the so-called " Revolución Restauradora ").

Last years

Andrade was expelled from the country and settled in Puerto Rico . In 1903 he was allowed to return to the country and he served the regime of Juan Vicente Gómez (who had overthrown him as a participant in the Revolución Restauradora ) as foreign (1916-1917) and interior minister (1917-1922).

He died on February 17, 1925 in Macuto ( Distrito Federal ).
