June 1914 in Ciutadella , Menorca , Spain ; † 18th October 2009 ) was an orthopedic surgeon , who in the 1950s Ponseti method for the non-surgical treatment of congenital clubfoot has developed . The Spanish born escaped the Spanish Civil War and became a faculty member and practicing physician at the University of Iowa .

biography

Ponseti studied medicine at the University of Barcelona . Shortly after its conclusion, the Spanish Civil War broke out between the Republican government of Spain and the putschists under General Francisco Franco . Ponseti served as a medical officer on the side of the loyalists as a lieutenant, later as a captain and worked there in the field of orthopedics and broken bones. At that time, Ponseti used the services of people smugglers to bring wounded soldiers to France. Soon afterwards he himself fled to France and from there to Mexico, where he worked as a general practitioner for two years. A doctor friend helped him there in 1941 to travel to Iowa and study orthopedics under Arthur Steindler. In 1944, Ponseti received full residency and became a member of the orthopedic faculty at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics .

Early on in his career in Iowa, Ponseti realized that the results of surgical clubfoot treatments were not very good - the patients subsequently had limited mobility. He began developing a treatment that took advantage of the flexibility of babies' ligaments. The new treatment method was initially received with some skepticism, but over the past 50 years it has been used by many doctors and health care providers, such as in the UK and Turkey.
