Ignatius von Peutingen came to Rome at the age of eight, where he grew up and studied theology , philosophy and law. After completing his studies, he was given canon patrons on November 9, 1666 in Ellwangen. Because of his outstanding abilities, all doors were open to him in Ellwangen, so in 1677 he was appointed scholastic by Prince Provost Johann Christoph Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden , and in 1697 finally appointed dean of the monastery. In addition, Peutingen was governor of Prince Provost Franz Ludwig of the Palatinate (1694–1732). Ignatius von Peutigen was the founder of the Ellwang Jesuit College , he appointed the Ellwang Jesuits as sole heirs . He died on October 18, 1718 and was buried in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Basilica of St. Vitus , where a splendid tomb on the north wall still commemorates him. Thanks to his estate, the magnificent college building (today the public prosecutor's office) was built between 1720 and 1722. The Jesuit fathers Amrhein and Guldimann provided the drafts. In the years 1722 to 1723 the grammar school (today a jury court) and from 1724 to 1728 the college church (today a Protestant town church ) were built from Peutingen's estate . After the dissolution of the Jesuit order from 1773 to 1802, the college was continued as the prince-provincial Collegium Ignatianum, until 1803 to 1815 the building was used as barracks for Württemberg troops. From 1818 to 1963 the Peutinger grammar school was housed there.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a blue shield with three silver pilgrim clams and red diagonal bars on top of each other. The crowned spangenhelm with a blue-silver cover wears as a jewel a bearded, blue-clad man's torso growing out of the helmet crown with a blue pointed hat studded with ostrich feathers , whose red cuff is covered with the three silver pilgrim shells.

This coat of arms also adorns Peutingen's tomb in the Liebfrauenkapelle, where he is buried next to Father Philipp . It can also be seen in the entrance area of the Peutinger grammar school, which goes back to the Jesuit college (old building next to the Evangelical City Church).

In these places the coat of arms was painted al fresco , but later spoiled by the ignorance of a restorer , so that the coat of arms in Ellwangen could not be preserved in the correct color anywhere.
