history

The construction of the airport Blagoveshchensk-Ignatievo began in 1959 not far from the village Ignatievo, after which the airport is named. The first terminal was made of wood and was located roughly where the current terminal is. In the early 1990s, the airport's passenger numbers declined as Russia suffered economic decline after the dissolution of the Soviet Union .

In July 1997, the governor of Amur Oblast signed a decree establishing the airport, a federal state unitary company wholly owned by the Oblast government, which owns and operates the airport. Partial reconstruction of the airport began in the 2000s to increase capacity and improve the quality of passenger traffic. In 2007, plans to build a new terminal were resumed after it was temporarily closed in 1988. The terminal was put into operation in December 2010.
