Igor Dmitrievich Ado

Igor Dmitrijewitsch Ado ( Russian Игорь Дмитриевич Адо , scientific transliteration Igor 'Dmitrievič Ado ; born January 17, 1910 in Kazan ; † June 30, 1983 ) was a Russian mathematician .

Igor Ado studied at the Kazan State University and was a student of Nikolai Grigoryevich Chebotaryov . After graduating in 1931, he worked at the University of Kazan, and since 1935 at the chemical-technical institute. In 1939 he was appointed professor there, and from 1958 to 1970 he headed the mathematics department.

Ado dealt with Lie groups and Lie algebras ; it is especially known from Ado's theorem, according to which finite-dimensional Lie algebras can be faithfully represented by matrices over a field with the characteristic zero.
