Igor Krivokapič

Igor Krivokapič (born November 10, 1965 in Ljubljana ) is a Slovenian composer , former tuba player and instrument inventor.

biography

Igor Krivokapič studied tuba at the Music Academy in Ljubljana . He then moved to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and perfected his skills under Toby Hanks (tuba), Caleb Morgan (electronic composition), Bob Ceely (classical composition) and Malcolm Peyton (orchestration). After completing his studies, Igor Krivokapič was solo tuba player with the Slovenian Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1985 to 1995. Due to a car accident in 1995, he had to end his career as a tuba player. He then worked from 1996 to 1999 as a music editor for the cultural program ARS of the Slovenian radio. From 1999 to 2009 Igor Krivokapič was a freelance composer and then followed a call from the Conservatory for Music and Ballet in Ljubljana. He has been professor for tuba and chamber music there since 2009, and also teaches part-time at the local music academy.

In the early 2000s, Igor Krivokapič developed new shapes and designs for the helicopter tuba . This new instrument family consists of 6 Helikontuben in different sizes and Tonumfängen and New Helikontuben ( New Helicons called). The first examples of these instruments were built by the German manufacturer Meinl-Weston . The new helicopter tubes were presented at meetings of the International Tuba Euphonium Society ITEA. First in Budapest in 2004, further performances followed in 2008 in Cincinnati and 2014 in Bloomington. The first compositions especially for these new helicopter tubes have also been performed at festivals in Europe and North America.

Igor Krivokapič was a delegate at the UNESCO Tribune internationale des compositeurs in 1996 and 1997. Igor Krivokapič won prizes for his works at the composition competition Concorso Internazionale per Giovani Strumentisti in Povoletto (Italy) in 2000 and 2001. The compositions are published by Edicije DSS, Sloway music editions, Edition Reift, Edizioni Musicali Wicky, HoneyRock Publishing, Saxtet Publications and ITEA Publications.
