Igor Maratowitsch Ponomarev

Igor Maratowitsch Ponomarjow ( Russian Игорь Маратович Пономарёв ; born June 6, 1965 in Leningrad , † October 30, 2006 in London ) was a Russian diplomat.

Life

Ponomarev studied at the Leningrad State University , where he graduated in marine engineering . He then worked at the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping as a senior surveying engineer . Later he was responsible for coordinating the cooperation with the International Maritime Organization . After being promoted to Head of the International Cooperation Department, he served as Deputy Director General of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping from 1999 to 2003. From 2001 to 2002 he was also chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies . In 2003 he was appointed Permanent Representative of Russia to the International Maritime Organization, where he headed the Committee for Ship Design and Equipment.

On October 30, 2006, Ponomarev suffered a heart attack while attending an opera, which resulted in his death. As reported by Focus magazine, the circumstances surrounding Ponomarev's death were mysterious. On the one hand, he wanted to meet two days later with Mario Scaramella , who was in contact with Alexander Litvinenko , who was poisoned two days later ; on the other hand, Ponomarev is said to have shown symptoms of thallium poisoning .
