Igor Semjonowitsch Kon ( Russian Игорь Семёнович Кон ; born May 21, 1928 in Leningrad ; † April 27, 2011 in Moscow ) was a Russian sociologist and sexologist .

Life

Kon is considered a pioneer of Russian sexology. He was the first Soviet scientist to call for homosexuality to be removed from the list of mental illnesses and, in particular, researched the status of sexual minorities. Another major research focus was the interaction between sexuality and culture.

In recent years, Kon has criticized that equality in Russia is just propaganda , not a reality. The man sees himself as dominant there, sexism and the macho cult of bygone times still exist today. A discussion about gender roles does not take place or is even suppressed. Although men would seek sexual contact with women, otherwise they would continue to live in a male society and not be able to do much with women. Since the very conservative ideal of the man is not achieved by many, homophobia is an ideal means to be able to "upgrade" oneself. Men would quickly be considered gay if they were tolerant of homosexuals .

Kon saw in the Soviet Union a connection between the public repression of sexuality and the (sexual) propensity for violence, especially among young people , for example the very high number of rape in schools. Many were not able to articulate sexual desires.

He was a member of the International Board of Trustees of the German Society for Social Science Sex Research .
