Igor Slobodník (born October 23, 1962 in Bratislava ) is a Slovak diplomat .

Life

From 1977 to 1981 he attended a grammar school in Bratislava and then studied in his hometown at the Comenius University . From 1985 to 1986 he worked as an editor at the Czechoslovak Press Agency (ČSTK). From April 1986 to March 1987 he did his military service. From 1987 to 1992 he worked, most recently as editor-in-chief, of the weekly newspaper Výber .

Slobodník's diplomatic career began in 1992 as the private secretary of the Czechoslovak Foreign Minister in Prague . He then worked in various functions for the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense. In 1993 he became deputy head of the Slovak embassy in Denmark . He became Slovak Ambassador to the UK in London in 1997, but returned to Slovakia in 2001 as Political Director in the Ministry of Defense. In 2004 he became the permanent representative of Slovakia to the North Atlantic Council of NATO until he took over the role of political director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2008. From 2010 to 2015 he worked as an ambassador in Germany . This was followed by a position as State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. In addition to security policy, he was also responsible for external relations, foreign trade, development aid and international organizations. In 2016 he worked in the office of the Foreign Minister until he was sent to Paris as the Slovak ambassador to France in August 2017 .

He is married and has two sons. In addition to Slovak , he also speaks Danish , German , English , French , Polish and Russian .
