The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo ( Portuguese for Our Lady of the Mount Carmel Church , Chinese嘉 模 聖母 堂) is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Macau , which is also often under called Taipa.

history

After the Portuguese occupied the island, which has been inhabited by Chinese since the 18th century, from 1847 onwards and annexed it in 1851, they built a church in 1885, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This confirmed the arrival of the Portuguese colonialists and with it the arrival of Catholicism on Taipa. The church building, erected on a hill, had a view over the village of Taipa, former villas, which were restored today for the Casas-Museu da Taipa , and the sea, which has now become the Cotai zone through land reclamation . The associated Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is historically equal to the parish of the church, but was never a secular administrative unit . Nevertheless, these former parishes are still used today for the statistical division of Macau into districts .

In 1985 the church was restored .

architecture

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo was built by the Portuguese based on a European model. The architectural style is clearly neoclassical , which can be seen in the temple architecture of the front , which is based on antiquity, and the ensemble of columns . Typical of many buildings in Macau is in bright pastel colors held facade . The church building has a bell tower , but without a pointed roof. The approx. 186 m² church building is divided into three levels: bell tower, main nave and choir . Inside there is space for more than 200 believers. On the high altar is a picture of the Virgin Mary , while the left side altar is adorned with an image of Jesus adorned as a king and the right side altar with an image of Saint Joseph of Nazareth .

Todays use

The church is one of the six parishes or parishes in Macau. The Holy Mass is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo at different times, as in many other churches of Macao respectively on Cantonese , English or Portuguese held. On Sunday mornings, the Cantonese-speaking mass begins, followed by the English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking mass; on Saturdays, Holy Mass is also held early in the evening in English. With the exception of Tuesdays, the fair always takes place on weekdays in Cantonese in the morning and in English in the evening.

Today, the place is a popular destination, especially for honeymooners and tourists, due to its quiet, romantic atmosphere in the countryside.
