Ikioi Shōta ( Japanese 勢 翔 太 ; * October 11, 1986 in Osaka Prefecture ), actually Toguchi Shōta ( 東 口 翔 太 ), is a Japanese sumo wrestler in the Makuuchi division.
Sumo career
In 2005, Toguchi began his career in the Isenoumi-beya stable at the age of 18. Since his first professional sumo tournament, he has been fighting under the ring name Ikioi. At the Nagoya Basho 2005 he remained undefeated (7-0), but lost in the end the decisive duel for the overall victory against the future Maegashira Daido. Thanks to this successful record, Ikioi achieved rapid promotion to the Sandanme division. There he immediately achieved a 6-1, which was not enough for the next promotion. A few months later, however, Ikioi was allowed to compete in Makushita for the first time . His debut in the third highest division was quite successful with a record of 5-2, but he still spent the next five years in Makushita. During this period he only achieved more than five wins in a tournament once. In his 6-1 in September 2010 he was only defeated by the eventual tournament winner Takayasu .
A year later, Ikioi handed another 5-2 for promotion to the Jūryō division. Although he only had the lowest rank Jūryō 14 on his debut , he immediately won the tournament with a 12-3 record. A 10-5 in the ensuing basho guaranteed him a spot in the makuuchi . Ikioi could not assert himself in Makuuchi immediately and was briefly downgraded to the Jūryō division. In September 2012, he narrowly missed his second Jūryō tournament success (Yusho). A record of 11-4 brought him into the playoff for the title, in which, however, he had to admit defeat to the later Komusubi Jōkōryū. The return to the Makuuchi Division was safe for him and he has not had to leave it since then.
In September 2013 Ikioi had reached the rank of Maegashira 1 for the first time , but was unsuccessful , especially in the encounters with the Ōzeki and the yokozuna . At the next tournament he managed an 11-4 as maegashira 6 , for which he was presented with his first kantō-shō . In January 2014 Ikioi defeated a Ōzeki ( Kotoshōgiku ) for the first time in his career , but only ended the tournament with a record of 6-9. At the 2014 Natsu Basho, Ikioi scored 11-4 for the second time. He stood after 13 days at 11-2 and lost on the last two days against the Sekiwake Gōeidō and Tochiōzan . In the end he received the Kantō-shō for the second time. In September 2014 he started as Maegashira 5 and finished the tournament with 10-5. He beat Ōzeki Kotoshōgiku and the makuuchi debutant Ichinojō (13-2), who otherwise only lost to Yokozuna Hakuhō . Ikioi was then promoted to komusubi for the first time , but his debut in the San'yaku ranks ended with a make-koshi (6-9).
At the beginning of 2015, he hit a low point with a disastrous record of 1-14, which slipped him to the rank of maegashira 13 . With a 10-5 in May this year, he returned to the upper maegashira ranks. This was short-lived, however, as Ikioi delivered another weak result in Nagoya with a 2-13. In September 2015, he started as Maegashira 12 and achieved a strong 11-4 result. His 10-1 record after eleven days was tarnished by defeats against the higher-ranking Yoshikaze, Tochinoshin and Kotoshōgiku. In the end, he was awarded the Kantō-shō (for the third time in his career).
