Ikuo Hirayama

Ikuo Hirayama ( Japanese 平 山 郁 夫 Hirayama Ikuo ; born June 15, 1930 in Setoda (瀬 戸 田 町) in Toyota County (now Setodachō, Onomichishi ), Hiroshima Prefecture ; died December 2, 2009 ) was a Japanese Nihonga painter during Showa - and Heisei time . He is particularly known for his pictures of columns of dromedaries.

Hirayama Ikuo enrolled in 1949 at the "University of Fine Arts Tōkyō" in Nihonga (東京 美術 学校 日本 画 科, Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō Nihonga-ka), the forerunner of Geidai , and graduated there in 1953. He then worked there as an assistant and continued his education under Maeda Seison .

In 1955, his picture “Way Home” (家 路, Ieji) was accepted for the 38th exhibition of Nihon Bijutsuin . This first picture was to be followed by many more in the Bijutsuin exhibition series. In 1961, for example, at the 44th exhibition, the picture “Delivery of Buddhism” (仏 教 伝 来, Bukkyō denrai) was shown: It depicts two priests riding horses in front of a blue forest. The picture was praised by the critic Kawakita Michiaki (河北 倫明; 1914–1995) in the newspaper. The picture “Dream of Conception” (受胎 霊 夢; Jutai reiyū) submitted at the 47th exhibition was awarded the Bijutsuin Grand Prize. In the same year he stayed in Europe from October to May 1964 with a UNESCO Fellowship.

In 1964, his work "Establishing the Heart of Diamond Mountain" (建立 金剛 心 図, Kenritsu Kongōshin) received various awards. In 1967 he was accepted as a member of the Bijutsuin. At the 49th exhibition, he received the Minister of Education's Prize for "Buddha Explanations on the Shoagon Sutra" (仏 説 長 阿含 経 巻 五). In the same year he took part in the first research trip to the Middle East and copied cave paintings in Cappadocia . In 1966 he participated in the restoration of the interior wall paintings at the main temple of Hōryū-ji and was awarded for the wall No. 3 responsible.

From 1975 he traveled annually to Afghanistan and Central Asia to collect material on Buddhist art. He was on the road 150 times in total. In 1975 he was also appointed professor at Geidai. In that year he handed over to Pope Paul VI. the recently created painting "Explanatory of the ancient East Asian traditions" (古代 東方 伝 教 者, Kojidai tōhō-den kyōsha) for the Vatican's collection of modern art and became a Knight of the Order of Gregory . The painting “In Memory of Maeda Seison” (画 禅院 青 邨 先生 還 浄 図), shown in 1979 at the 63rd exhibition of the Bijutsuin, was awarded the Prime Minister's Prize.

In 1983 he visited the Mogao grottoes in China . In September 1988 Hirayama traveled to Loulan for the first time to record the traces of the city there. That year he became dean of the Geidai Art Faculty. From 1989 to 1996 he was President of Geidai. In 1993 he was honored with special cultural merits , in 1997 he was made Knight of the Legion of Honor and in 1999 he was awarded the Order of Culture . From 2001 to 2004 he was again President of the Geidai. In 2004 he received the Asahi Prize .

The Hirayama Silk Road Art Museum (平 山 郁 夫 シ ル ク ロ ー ド 美術館, Hirayama Ikuo Shirukurorōdo Bijutsukan) was built at Hirayama's hometown.
