Ildefonso Rea

Ildefonso Rea OSB (born January 14, 1896 in Arpino Province Frosinone , Italy , † September 23, 1971 ) was an Italian Benedictine abbot .

Life

He entered the Benedictine order in 1915 and was ordained a priest in 1921 . In 1929 he became abbot of the Cava de 'Tirreni Abbey and in November 1945 archabbot of the Montecassino monastery . In 1963, Rea was ordained episcopal through Cardinal Carlo Confalonieri and was named titular bishop of Corone . As a council father, he took part in all sessions of Vatican II from 1962 to 1965 . As Archabbot of Montecassino, true to his motto “Where it was and how it was”, he took care of the reconstruction of this ancestral monastery of the Benedictine order, which was almost completely destroyed in the battle of Monte Cassino . His successor as Archabbot of Montecassino was Martino Matronola in 1971 .
