Ildephons Schwarz (actually: Carl Joseph Schwarz ; born November 4, 1752 in Bamberg , † June 19, 1794 in Banz Monastery ) was a German Catholic theologian.

Life

The son of the professor of medicine Christian Wilhelm Schwarz († 1767) and his wife (née Bauer von Heppenstein) attended the grammar school in his hometown at the age of twelve and the Benedictine monastery of Banz at the age of sixteen. In 1769 he entered the Benedictine order there , received the order name Ildephons and in 1770 took the religious vows. He then undertook philosophical and theological studies.

He completed his studies under the direction of Columban Rösser (1736-1780) and Johann Philipp Placidus Sprenger (1735-1806), where he also dealt with mathematics and law. In 1779 he became professor of philosophy and mathematics, later the theology and librarian of the convent school. He declined further appointments. Schwarz was a critical exponent of the Enlightenment, whose most important work was the Handbuch der Religionen.
