History, hydronymy and synonyms

At the beginning of the 19th century, at the time of the then French administration of the areas on the left bank of the Rhine , the water cannot be proven with certainty. The map taken here by the French Colonel Tranchot in 1802 and 1805 shows the course of the later compulsory trench as a wafer-thin line, but depending on the type of execution, this line would be more likely to be interpreted as an unpaved road.

In 1844 at the latest, however, a section of the later Canal III C already existed between today's Salbruch (then: Soll Broich ) and a point a little north of today's L475 (Tönisvorster Strasse) between Süchteln and Hagen under the name Zwangsgraben. At that time, the compulsory ditch flowed directly into the Niers , which still followed its original course (the Niers was only relocated and straightened around 1930).

In 1892, Canal III C was already present in its current form on the official maps of the former Kingdom of Prussia, but from now on, just like the lower reaches of Canal III3b , it is simply referred to as a branch canal . This somewhat imprecise naming procedure means that the underflow of Canal III3b cannot be distinguished by name on the official maps of Prussia from its own inlet, Canal III C. The North Rhine-Westphalian surveying authorities have continued this unchanged to this day (2010).

In contrast, the water body is shown in the water stationing map published by the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia as "Branch Canal Left Arm (Canal III C)" and is now officially differentiated from the lower course of Canal III3b .

course

The source of Canal III C is in Viersen - Clörath , the water station map shows a location for 2006 approx. 500 m north of the Clörath mill and immediately east of the Salbruch .

According to somewhat older information, the source was still at the Clörather Mühle itself in the 1990s and was possibly fed directly by the same earlier when the Niers was still flowing by here.

The canal III C now flows from here first westwards through the Salbruch, to the west of which it bends to the northwest and between Hagen and Süchteln first crosses the L 475 (here: Tönisvorster Strasse ) and finally the former CEG railway line .

The confluence of canal III C (coming from behind on the right) into canal III3b southwest of Grefrath - Oedt .

About one kilometer north of the former KEG route, the stream bends slightly to the right just before the Viersen city limits and now flows almost northwards into the area of the municipality of Grefrath .

In Grefrath municipality, the III C canal then flows almost exactly 700 m further and finally flows into the III3b canal a little southwest of the Oedt district .

Tributaries

Two small, nameless streams are shown as tributaries on the water station map:

  • (NN), water code 2861642 (from left)
  • (NN), water code 2861644 (from right)

Both tributaries are located in the Viersen urban area south of the former KEG route .

Dates and character

Canal III C is almost 5 km long and its catchment area is around 4 km².

In by the Westphalian North Rhine- published Department of Environment and Conservation, Agriculture and Consumer Protection classifications of water type and water quality , the channel C III , other than the branch channel (channel III3b) or Willicher Flöth not mentioned. No further information can be given at this point.

Flora and fauna

In 2010, one of the few nesting and breeding sites for white storks in the area of the district of Viersen was located near the source of Canal III C , at the Clörather Mühle .
