geography

course

From the source to the Klörather Steg

The Flöth rises today southeast of Willich - Weucken (near the Broicherhof ), in some plans the source is also given a few kilometers further east in the Dickerheide , this inlet has apparently silted up in the meantime.

It then flows south past the Willich district of Wekel, which has been newly created in recent years, towards the west.

In the Gallbruch area , shortly before the A44 , it is fed by the Münchheider Graben flowing in from the north .

After crossing under the motorway, it first flows north of Neersen - Klein Jerusalem under the L361 (main road), finally south of the Anrath outer Donk area further west to the crossing under Neersener Straße , beyond which it is, southwest of the Anrath Donk settlement , Turns to the northwest.

The heavily weed Flöth southwest of the Anrather Flöthhof

Its further course now leads through the southern Anrath outer areas, southwest of the Flöthhof and the Eschert , northeast of Vennheide and again southwest of the Hochheide , to the rain retention basin at Klörather Steg .

Up to this point, the Flöth is heavily weed, generally only carries little water and dries out again and again. With the water supply from the Anrath rainwater retention basin on Klörather Steg, the situation is now much better:
Down the stream, the Flöth is from here onwards a stream that is usually sufficiently or well filled with water, as can be seen in some pictures.

From the Klörather Steg to the mouth

Following this system, the Flöth initially maintains its north-westerly direction of flow, then first crosses under Anrather Brückenstraße and then immediately the Krefeld – Viersen – Mönchengladbach railway line .

The Flöth west of Anrath

The Flöth has now left the Willich urban area and now flows into Tönisvorst , although the direction of flow here initially seems to be more westward.

A few meters north of the Schloßmacher-Hof in the Vorster Mühlenbroich area, the Flöth then bends almost suddenly to the right, almost at right angles, and first flows a short distance north.

Here you then fall next, a little west of Anrath, the Anrather Graben , which is also known as Anrath Bach .

At the inflow of the Anrath Trench, the Flöth bends slightly to the left again, from here on it flows approximately in a north-northwest direction, gradually approaching the village of Vorst .

Bicycle viaduct over the Flöth west of Haus Donk near Vorst

About 800 m downstream, after the Anrather Graben, the Votzhöfer Graben flows into the Flöth from the right.

After another 200 m, also from the right, there is an inflow from the moat from Haus Donk near Vorst, east of the Flöth , not to be confused with Haus Donk at the Anrath cemetery.

Coming from Vorster Haus Donk, a cycle path also runs over a somewhat original viaduct over the Flöthbach, as can be seen in the picture opposite.
The Flöth crossing under the former KEG railway line between Vorst and Süchteln

Shortly before entering Vorst, the Flöth finally crosses under the L 475 (Süchtelner Straße) and then directs its course more to the left, so that from here it continues to flow approximately in a west-northwest direction.

Your further path now leads past the southwestern edge of the Vorster sports field and then moves away from the village of Vorst.

About one kilometer further down the stream, the next step is to cross under the KEG railway line from Viersen to St.Tönis, which has now been converted into a cycle path (picture).

Approximately 650 m further on, a little east of the Husshof, which is already in the city of Viersen, the confluence with the Hofflöth to the Zweigkanal .

Hofflöth, Schüpp and Zweigkanal

The confluence of the Flöth and Hofflöth

The course of the Flöth has not changed significantly in the last 200 years, at least between the current source at Willich-Wekel and the confluence with the Hofflöth near the Husshof.

It is quite different with the Hofflöth, with which the Flöth finally merges.

Originally the Flöth flowed into a stream called "Schüpp" near Husshof.

At that time the Schüpp flowed into the Niers near Uda Castle near Oedt , the river bed of which was once further east there than it is today, and finally fell through the extensive straightening and laying of the stream bed carried out in its original flow area from the middle of the 19th century (including the later Niers straightening around 1930) gradually fell victim.

In 1844 the creek bed extended from Oedt to what was then Hoffbroich south of Anrath, around 1900 only a branch of the now established branch canal near Oedt is shown as "Schüpp", the Schüpp is completely missing on later maps.

Instead, the straightened and z. T. moved earlier Schüpp from the mouth of the Flöthein near Husshof upstream today as "Hofflöth" and downstream as "Zweigkanal". Hofflöth and Zweigkanal together form Canal III3b .

In the area of Clörath , parts of the former river bed of the Schüpp are still present as a branch of the canal III3b / Hofflöth, but are shown in official waterway maps as NN ( no name ).

Dates and character

The bank of the Flöthbach near the Vorster Haus Donk

The Flöth is a good 13 kilometers long and its catchment area is around 71 square kilometers.

On its upper course (up to about river km 10) it is classified as type 19 ( small low-lying river in river and river valleys ) and on its lower course as type 18 ( loess-loam-shaped lowland brook ).

Their water quality is between quality class II and II-III.

biosphere

Grow in the brook willows which a natural environment for bats and owls form. Other bird species such as the wren , the wagtail and the common redstart can also be found there.

Due to the large number of animal species in the Flöthbach today, even more rare bird species have been observed since 2011. This includes some storks coming from the area of the Clörather Mühle, which look for food in the meadows all around. Kingfishers have also been sighted several times by nature-savvy Vorster citizens. The dipper is also a particularly rare guest.

During an inspection in September 2010, a nutria could be seen east of Anrather Brückenstraße , and many frogs in the area of Vorster Mühlenbroich . More on this below. When marine growth is found mostly water star , sometimes waterweed or milfoil.

Many animal and insect species are resident in the water in the Mühlenbroich area. If you look at it for a long time and take a closer look, you can find the nine-spined stickleback in large numbers, even in a few locations, e.g. B. on tributaries and bridges, the three-spined stickleback , sometimes some gudgeons as well as dragonfly, caddis fly, stonefly larvae and a variety of other rare insects in and around the water, as well as the water scorpion . Amphibians are of many different species in the flute. These include domestic crested newts, pond newts , water frogs , common frogs and pond frogs . Resident reptiles are the now rare grass snake and the adder is very rarely seen on a few sunny days foraging in the bank area. Due to the nature protection of the Mühlenbroich area, near Haus Donk, even various native lizard species such as fence, emerald and forest lizards were able to survive in a few remote places. The wall lizard , still quite common in the 1970s and 1980s, is missing today.
