The State Ilia University ( Georgian ილიას სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტი , Ilias sachelmzipo uniwersiteti ) is a university in the Georgian capital Tbilisi .

history

On October 1, 1948, the State Institute for Foreign Languages ​​Tbilisi was founded. The institute was later elevated to a university and was named Ilia Chavchavadze State University for Language and Culture after the leading figure of the Georgian national movement, the poet, dramaturge and journalist Ilia Chavchavadze . Degrees could be obtained in English, German, Spanish, Italian, Georgian, Russian and Swedish. In 2006 it was merged with the Sulchan Saba Orbeliani University (originally: Institute ) for Education and was given its current name. Since then, other educational and research institutions have been connected to the university: the State Academy for Physical Education and Sport (2007–2012), the Dawit Guramishvili College for Education , the Iakob Gogebashvili Research Institute for Education , the National Astrophysical Ewgeni-Charadse Observatory Abastumani , the Seismological Monitoring Center and the Zoological Institute .
