Ilkka Tapani Salmi (born December 20, 1968 in Turku ) had been the head of the Finnish security police responsible for state security Suojelupoliisi (Supo) since 2007 . From December 17, 2010 Salmi became head of INTCEN (formerly Joint Situation Center ) under the direction of the European External Action Service . The official appointment was announced in February 2011, along with a leave of absence from Supo. In December 2015, Salmi was surprisingly appointed director of the DS Security Directorate , a Brussels-based subdivision of the European Commission's Directorate-General Human Resources and Security (DG HR). His new roles also include counter-espionage , security clearance and counter-terrorism , crisis management and VIP protection . Salmi gave up his dormant position as head of the Finnish Supo by notifying the Finnish Ministry of the Interior.

Life

Salmi studied law at the University of Turku and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and graduated in 1993 with a Masters in International and Comparative Law, LL.M. , from. In 1995 he worked as an assistant in the European Parliament and for the Finnish delegation in 1998. In the Finnish military, he achieved the rank of lieutenant . In addition to his military and government career, Salmi also worked as an advisor to the former Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen .
