The State Route begins on US Highway 14 in Fox River Grove and ends after 19 miles in Highland Park on US Highway 41 .

After the junction of US 14, the road runs east and strikes in North Barrington on the Illinois State Route 59 . To the west of the village of Lake Zurich the street from is US Highway 12 crossed and leads on through the Ela Township before the east of Long Grove on State Route 83 meets. Before crossing the Des Plaines River, the IL 22 crosses the US Highway 45 and State Route 21 . On the border between Lincolnshire and Bannockburn , the road passes Interstate 94 , which in this section forms the Tri-State Tollway . In the north of Bannockburn it crosses Illinois State Route 43 before ending at US 41 in Highland Park after 31 kilometers.
