The Illyrian buttercup ( Ranunculus illyricus ) is a species of the genus buttercup ( Ranunculus ).
features
The Illyrian buttercup is a perennial, herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 30 to 50 centimeters. The plant forms subterranean runners and tubers. The stem and leaves are densely hairy white. The basal leaves have three to five sections of the first order. The sections are linear-lanceolate and undivided. Often this plant does not flower and only develops undivided basal leaves. The anthers are yellow.
The flowering period extends from May to June.
The species is diploid or tetraploid, its chromosome number is 2n = 16 or 32
.
Occurrence
The species occurs in Europe in Central Europe, Italy and the temperate to warm temperate south-east Europe. To the north their area extends to southern Sweden. It grows on richer and often ruderally influenced, continental sandy and dry grasslands and dry meadows. It is a character species of the order Festucetalia valesiacae, but also occurs in societies of the Arrhenatherion association.

The Illyrian buttercup is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and heather beds.
