Inside of the dome

layout

The mausoleum was built in the 16th century over the grave of the scholar al-Buchari and has a square floor plan with a side length of nine meters. The total height of the building is 17 meters, a dome crowns the cuboid substructure. The central pishtak of the mausoleum forms the end of a wide, paved path that crosses the memorial complex. The walls of the building are decorated with green, blue and white tiles that form filigree patterns. The inside of the dome is decorated with large and colorful ornaments .

Sarcophagus in the center of the mausoleum

In the center of the mausoleum there is al-Buchari's tomb and a magnificent sarcophagus . This can be seen from the outside and is decorated with inscriptions that describe the life of al-Buchari. The floor in the tomb is made of polished marble, the walls are also covered with Arabic inscriptions in the lower area. In fact, the body of al-Bukhari is below the mausoleum and not in the sarcophagus that has been erected.

meaning

Today the mausoleum is of great importance as an Islamic pilgrimage site. During the Soviet era , pilgrimages were severely restricted and the mausoleum was forgotten for the time being. In the 1950s the grave was rediscovered due to the importance of al-Buchari for the Islamic world and occasionally visited by pilgrims. The mausoleum only experienced a significant upgrade after the independence of Uzbekistan. On the instructions of the then President Islom Karimov , a large memorial complex was built, which was completed in 1998 and today contributes to the importance of the mausoleum as one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country.
