Iman al-Obeidi ( Arabic إيمان العبيدي, DMG Īmān al-ʿUbaidī ; * 1982 ) is a Libyan lawyer.

Civil War in Libya

On March 26, 2011, against the backdrop of the civil war , she entered a press conference at the Rixos Al Nasr Hotel in Tripoli and accused in front of the cameras that she was by soldiers of the Gaddafi regime after she was arrested at a checkpoint in Tripoli abused and raped.

She was taken away by security forces with the help of hotel employees and the use of violence against journalists and was then held by the authorities for 72 hours. Libyan politician Moussa Ibrahim said she was deranged, drunk, a liar and a prostitute. Her family, who live in Tobruk , denied this allegation and said that Iman al-Obeidi had been offered money and a house if she publicly retracted her allegations.

According to her parents, she has meanwhile been held in Bab al-Aziziya .

With the help of a renegade Libyan army officer, Iman al-Obeidi, who had meanwhile become a symbolic figure for opponents of the Libyan regime, managed to flee to Tunis on May 5, 2011 , where she received support from Western diplomats.

After escaping Libya, Ms. Obaidi sought refuge in Qatar . At the request of the National Transitional Council, the authorities there deported her forcibly and against her will to Benghazi on June 3, 2011 . Representatives of the American government and human rights organizations expressed extreme concern over the incident. After a stay in a Romanian refugee camp in July 2011, Iman al-Obeidi was granted asylum in the United States .
