Impala (beer)
Impala is a beer brand from Mozambique . It belongs to the Mozambican brewery group Cervejas de Moçambique (CDM), which is in turn a SABMiller subsidiary. The CDM brews the Impala beer at their new factory in Nampula, which was built in 2010 .
Impala beer was introduced at the end of 2011 and is considered the world's first industrially produced beer made from manioc . The name refers to the African impala antelope, which is also shown on the labels.
The beer is made from 70% cassava and 30% barley and brewed in the CDM's newest brewery in Nampula in the north of the country. It has an alcohol content of 6.5%, higher than the usual 4.5% to 5.5% of other beers.
History of origin
Various goals should be achieved with a beer made from cassava: the overproduction of cassava by the regional farmers should be reduced in order to strengthen the local economy. In addition, an inexpensive beer should come on the market, as a cheaper alternative for less affluent layers.
Impala should be priced around 70% of other beers. At the same time, the parent company negotiated reduced taxation with the government of Mozambique .
The brewery was targeting an initial consumption of 40,000 tons of cassava, which would be obtained by 1,500 to 2,000 farmers. In 2015, around 7,500 smallholders were already supplying manioc for Impala. At the same time, CDM got involved in the region with a number of non-profit, high-profile projects, such as newly built village fountains.
Impala has since been considered a successfully established brand. In particular, the positive aspects for the regional economy are highlighted in the media . As a result, sales were improved and expanded to the whole country, with production also in Maputo.
Possibly because of the charitable aspect, but probably also because of its low price and the higher alcohol content, Impala beer has since been considered a popular beer of youth culture in the country.
