The Imperial Crown of India

The Imperial Crown of India , the Indian emperor's crown is, together with the British Crown Jewels kept, but not even a part of them.

history

The crown was made in 1911 for George V as Emperor of India . The need for another crown in addition to the British Crown Jewels is due to the fact that the British Crown Jewels are not legally allowed to leave the United Kingdom .

King George and Queen Mary traveled to Delhi to proclaim before the Indian princes as Emperor and Empress of India . There was no coronation because the Archbishop of Canterbury did not consider it appropriate to hold a Christian mass in a Hindu country. Therefore the king simply wore the crown when he came before the princes.

The royal jewelers created the crown for £ 60,000 . It weighs 34.05 ounces (0.97 kg) and is set with emeralds , rubies , sapphires and 6,100 diamonds . The considerable weight of the crown meant that King George complained of severe headaches after wearing it .

Since then, the crown has not been worn by any monarch . The Imperial Crown of India is the only crown of a British monarch that, according to the scheme of continental European crowns, has eight instead of the four traditionally used in Great Britain crown half-bows.
