In memoriam -

In Memoriam is a CD / LP by the German pagan metal band Mayhemic Truth , on which their EP Cythraw and their demo recording Demo '96 were posthumously re-released.

Emergence

The recordings for the EP were made in February 1995 in the FoA studios by Roman Thynorn, who supported the band as keyboard player, the demo recording there in September 1996. The band split up in June 1997 because of personal problems between Beliar and Balor.

In Memoriam was posthumously released by Costa Stoios on his Iron Pegasus Records label. The rest of the Mayhemic Truth recordings were not re-released as Stoios felt they sounded too bad.

When Beliar and Balor were writing music together again after settling their differences in 2000, they chose the new name Morrigan , as they thought it would have been a joke to go back to the Mayhemic Truth name after the release of In Memoriam , and this was therefore never considered.

layout

The held cover shows the silhouettes of several megaliths against an orange sky.

The design of the re-release has been changed from the original and contains detailed information on the three original releases and pictures of their original inserts. The thank you list has also been updated and is very similar to that of the then current Morrigan CD. The quality of the cover, however, is worse than the original. The same was also criticized with the release of Protector's Ominous Message of Brutality .

style

Stylistically the band is strongly inspired by Bathory and mixes elements of their early, aggressive and raw albums like The Return ...... and Under the Sign of the Black Mark with epic influences of the Pagan / Viking albums like Hammerheart .

Reviews

According to Martin Wickler's criticism of Metal Hammer , the release proves "that Mayhemic Truth once belonged to the most promising bands on the German scene". Markus Eck from Metalmessage described In Memoriam as a "consistently brilliant record" that shows what the band had "for an incredibly great potential". Frank Stöver from Voices from the Darkside wrote that the music should please everyone who can enjoy a "perfect mix" of the epic Bathory albums with an "overall more dominant Black Metal grimness". He himself would like a successor with the other recordings. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from the rock-hard magazine is of the opinion that the mixture of “Black Metal in its primitive elemental force, which cracks straightforward, simply" just "evil, and on the other hand [...] pathos with heroic choirs, dragging hymns and Wagnerian marching bombast "Is not original, but" special because of its rarity ". He sees In Memoriam as “an homage to the early days of black art” and could “also recommend it from this point of view”. The magazine added the compilation to its "250 Black Metal Albums To Know" list.
