Mayhemic Truth was a German metal band from Großbettlingen . After its dissolution in 1998, it changed its name to Morrigan .

Band history

Mayhemic Truth was originally founded in 1992 by Beliar (vocals, guitar) and Balor (drums, then still under the pseudonym Leviathan). In December, the tape Rehearsal November 1992 was released, immediately after guitarist Chemosh left the band. In April 1993 the demo Son of Dawn appeared in an edition of 100 copies. Then Lilith got on as a bass player and the second demo Promotape '94 was released . On one of the first black metal tours through Germany, Mayhemic Truth played in the opening act for Immortal and Marduk . Underground fans promptly accused the band of selling out; this countered in the first edition of Ablaze that their influences are bands like Venom and Bathory and "not like other bands Immortal", so the allegations are "superfluous". In 1994 Lilith got out again and it was finally decided to continue with the two of them.

In 1995 the 7 '' EP Cythraw was released in a limited edition of 500 on Folter Records . This was followed by appearances as a duo with various bands such as Desaster and Occult and a mini tour with Mortuary Drape , Countess and Drowned. The group was then able to perform at the first Torture Open Air and the first Fuck Christmas Festival. Since the cooperation with Folter Records did not go particularly well, they decided to go their separate ways. Another demo called Demo '96 followed. From the orbit of the scene around the NSBM band Absurd , flyers against the group and fake interviews were published after it had distanced itself from organizations such as the Teutonic Brotherhood. Ironically, there is now a friendly relationship between the follow-up band Morrigan and Absurd.

In 1997 it was decided to let the group rest due to personal differences. Balor gave the reason that Beliar left the band because of his girlfriend. Posthumously, Iron Pegasus Records released the compilation In Memoriam in 1999 , which includes the songs from Demo '96 and the EP; the operator Costa Stoios also conducted a posthumous interview with Balor for the Tales of the Macabre . Another compilation under the same title was released in 2005 on the Swedish label I Hate Records , this new edition also contains the songs from Promo '94 . Shortly after the separation, Balor formed the band Blizzard.

After a two-year hiatus, Balor and Beliar formed a new band under the name Morrigan , named after the Celtic deity Morrígan and a song title from Mayhemic Truth.

Music genre

The style of Mayhemic Truth as well as its follow-up band Morrigan is heavily influenced by Bathory . The music was mostly mid-tempo and the production was similar to Bathory's Blood Fire Death album. In addition to the epic-atmospheric orientation of the individual songs, the songs were dominated by a high-pitched croaking voice and occasional clear vocals. In some cases, however, they also leaned on the quick initial phase of Bathory. The more epic pieces came from Beliar and the fast and aggressive ones from Balor. The band themselves didn't refer to their music as black metal . Balor said: “Black Metal is an LP from Venom and not a music style! […] I'm not tired about what Black Metal was, but I'm tired about what Black Metal is! This shitty theatralic and pseudo-mystical music has nothing to do with the original meaning of Black Metal. “ The musicians had no interest in Satanism and occultism . Since, in their opinion, Celtic and Norse mythology reflected the music of Mayhemic Truth, they wrote lyrics on these subjects instead.

reception

Mayhemic Truth was, like many of the bands of the second wave, strongly influenced by underground culture and accordingly the demos and the single were only received in the underground. Interviews were only held in fanzines . It was only with the release of Iron Pegasus and the re-establishment under the name Morrigan that the group became known in the rest of the metal scene . Mayhemic Truth is now considered to be one of the pioneers of German Black Metal and was accordingly recognized in the Black Metal Special of Rock Hard in October 2009. The compilation In Memoriam was added to the list of "250 Black Metal Albums To Know".
