Morrigan is a German metal band from Großbettlingen , whose music is based on Black , Thrash and Pagan / Viking Metal . It emerged from the previous band Mayhemic Truth , which was dissolved in 1997 .

Band history

In 2000, Balor and Beliar decided to make music together again and founded Morrigan. They borrowed the band name from an earlier Mayhemic Truth song title. Her first CD was released in May 2001 on the Barbarian Wrath label. In the same year they headlined the Under the Black Sun festival and took part in the Drakkar Hellfest with Merrimack , Mütiilation , Unpure and Watain, among others .

In April 2002 their second album Enter the Sea of Flames was released , at the end of 2002 Baldur joined as second guitarist. In May 2003 the band dropped out of the record deal with Barbarian Wrath and Beliar and Balor founded their own label Horns of Cernunos Productions. On September 15, 2003 Baldur got out again, Beliar and Balor continued to lead the group in twos. The album Celts was released on Horns of Cernunos Productions in late 2003. In 2004 a split 7 '' with Nocternity was released . A year later the album Headcult followed and in 2006 the album Welcome to Samhain on Undercover Records. In 2007 a split LP was released with the Japanese band Abigail and the last album to date, The Damned .

On November 6, 2010, Balor announced his departure due to personal differences between himself and Beliar; the planned album Werwolfs, Witches and Demons will not be released. He doesn't know whether Beliar Morrigan will continue or not, but he doesn't care either. On September 11, 2012, Balor announced that he and Beliar had clarified their personal issues and reformed Morrigan in August. He announced an album that would be released in the spring of 2013 via Undercover Records.

In 2013, Balor announced the end of the band again via Facebook:

"This was the 3rd and last attempt to go on with Beliar. It was not an easy decision but necessary. "

Music style and ideology

As with Mayhemic Truth, Morrigan's style of music is heavily based on the band Bathory . The parallels are unmistakably present in both the faster and the epic-long pieces of the group. The lyrics are based on Celtic - pagan themes, so that the group is occasionally counted as Pagan Metal or Viking Metal ; for Fenriz von Darkthrone her album Headcult sounds "as if it could have appeared between" Hammerheart "and" Twilight of the Gods "." He described it as the only "Viking Metal album [...] that is valuable" besides these albums. .

Although the group tries to embody a rather apolitical attitude, the band is said to be relatively close to the NSBM , especially since the musicians are friends with the right-wing extremist group Absurd and try to play down its political context. So the Heidenlärm 2005 , which was planned as the release party of the absurd album Blutgericht , had to be canceled because the police started a mass brawl between Hammerskins and representatives of the Blood and Honor faction, as they did shortly before at an Absurd concert in Glarus, Switzerland feared. A joint concert with Dies Ater , Totenburg , The True Frost and Magog, among others , was also canceled. In 2006, in a response from the state government to a major inquiry , the Hessian state parliament listed it as one of the right-wing extremist groups that had "been active in Hesse for the past ten years".

Morrigan's importance within the German black metal scene, on the other hand, is undisputed. The Rock Hard rated the group as one of the most important bands in the scene and included the albums Headcult and Welcome to Samhain in the list of "250 Black Metal albums that you should know".
