Twilight of the Gods ( Engl. , Twilight of the Gods ') is the sixth album by the Swedish band Bathory and her first, that the CD was published format.

History of origin

Quorthon wrote the music and lyrics for the album in 1991 and released it through Black Mark Production that same year . After the previous albums Blood Fire Death and Hammerheart , the album for the first time no longer contains any references to a line-up, as there was no longer a "group situation". In summer 2003, the album was digitally remastered and re-released alongside its predecessors .

Style and content

As on the previous album Hammerheart , Quorthon uses clear vocals, here even chorals and spoken passages. The album is slower than the previous one and quieter than Bathory's usual practice up to then; There are no fast songs here, overall the album is rather calm and medium tempo and ends with a ballad. The style has often been compared to that of Manowar , whose bassist Joey DeMaio , like Quorthon , is inspired by Richard Wagner . Quorthon denies, however, to have been influenced by Manowar; he himself did not know the band at the time, but Vvornth, the drummer on the album Blood Fire Death , was a Manowar fan and brought in the appropriate beat and Quorthon wrote the songs for it; however, he would never have wanted to copy Manowar and would have died on the idea that Bathory could be considered a Manowar copy.

He stated, however, that he later recognized the musical parallels, although Bathory concentrated more on atmosphere and Manowar was “more influenced by these topics such as battles, swords, the killing of people”, which for him seemed more “like these he- Man -Kiste, 'I am the strongest, the best, ...' But if you are the best, then you don't have to keep telling people that ”.

The music of the song Hammerheart comes from the movement Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's orchestral suite The Planets and was rearranged by Quorthon.

The texts show references to Nordic mythology and Friedrich Nietzsche ; the latter is quoted on the back of the LP.

reception

Twilight of the Gods live at the 2011 Ragnarök Festival

Quorthon himself later stated that in his opinion Twilight of the Gods was too far removed from Bathory's beginnings and referred back to the early phase of the project on his next album, Requiem . In German Metal Hammer Robert Müller described Bathory as “one of the most obscure bands far and wide”. Twilight of the Gods tie in seamlessly with the "bombast masterpiece" Hammerheart . Müller praised the "bombastic billowing guitar waves" and the "wonderfully pathetic singing", but criticized that it had turned out "a bit too dignified" compared to the predecessor, he lacked the "slide into hysteria at the height of the Wagner- worthy pomp" . He awarded five out of seven points. In the monthly “Soundcheck” the record only reached 28th place with an average of 3.30 points.

In early 2010, Alan Nemtheanga ( Primordial ) formed a Bathory tribute band called Twilight of the Gods . In addition to Iscariah (ex- Immortal , Dead to This World ), the cast also includes Nick Barker ( Testament , Benediction , ex- Dimmu Borgir , Cradle of Filth ), Blasphemer (ex- Mayhem , Aura Noir , Ava Inferi ) and Patrik Lindgren ( Thyrfing )., which is why they can also be called a supergroup . Since 2013 the band has been giving concerts with their own material, which is based on traditional heavy metal and has little to do with Bathory's material. A release of an album called Fire of the Mountain has been announced.
