Twilight of the Gods is a multinational heavy metal band.

history

In early 2010 founded Alan Nemtheanga ( Primordial ) a Bathory - Tribute band called Twilight of the Gods. In addition to Iscariah (ex- Immortal , Dead to This World ), the cast also includes Nick Barker ( Testament , Benediction , ex- Dimmu Borgir , Cradle of Filth ), Blasphemer (ex- Mayhem , Aura Noir , Ava Inferi ) and Patrik Lindgren ( Thyrfing ).

Originally, Nemtheanga planned to play a Bathory tribute concert with his band Primordial. This failed because the band "is too lazy to do it properly", which is why he founded the project with musician friends who were friends.

Also aware that Bathory's music had never been designed to be performed live, Nemtheanga spoke beforehand to Quorthon's family, who were enthusiastic about the idea of using Twilight of the Gods to “bring the music to life years after his death [to keep]". Nevertheless, protests against the project were loud in various Internet forums in 2010.

When Metalfest 2010, the band performed for the first time and was announced for their live debut headlining. She also headlined the 2010 Heidenfest Tour. Participation in numerous other important concerts and festivals followed, including the 70,000 Tons of Metal . At the Ragnarök Festival at the end of April 2011, the band played their last concert in Germany for the time being. A more detailed reason why it was the “last” concert was not given.

Due to their common musical backgrounds, Eriksen suggested that the band write their own pieces. In 2013 the band played concerts again, this time with their own material. The album Fire of the Mountain was released on September 27, 2013 in Europe and on October 1 in the USA. From October 16, the band went on a month-long tour of Europe with Rotting Christ and Negură Bunget .

Music genre

According to Nils Macher from Powermetal.de , the band wants to “emancipate themselves at least a little from the BATHORY drawer […] with their own material . But even that happens in small doses, after all, the band name still reminds of Quorthon and in almost every number a small reference flashes somewhere, even 'woohoo' choirs are not dispensed with. ”In contrast to Ereb Altor , however, the band is to some extent independent, to which Averill's vocals contribute in particular. At Forged in Blood he sees influences from the bands Manowar and Judas Priest . The title song of their album, Fire of the Mountain , is a Dio tribute. Nevertheless, according to the maker, the song is “very close to the epic phase of BATHORY, without being a real clone” and addresses “the same receptors as ' Twilight Of The Gods ' or ' Hammerheart '”. Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard, on the other hand, wrote that Twilight of the Gods is “no longer based on Bathory, but on old Manowar”, and Alan Averill has “a surprisingly strong 'real' Metal voice”. Sword of Damocles is "dramatic, pathetic, but always down-to-earth Heavy Metal", which could not be better and "in large parts actually reach the old Manowar level" and surpass "95 percent of all today's True Metal releases". The seven long songs on the debut "are mostly held in mid-tempo and therefore all the heavier".

Texts and ideology

Patrik Lindgren sees the band's performances “not as a worship of an idol, but rather as an homage to the music itself. To the music and the art that this person has created. From a creative point of view, Bathory was actually a one-man show. But we don't put this one person on a pedestal. ”The lyrics of their own songs should be dedicated to classic metal themes. The text to Fire of the Mountain is about Leopold I's battle against the Turks.
