70000 Tons of Metal (short: 70000 Tons , proper spelling "70000tons OF METAL") is a Metal - Festival , which annually on a cruise ship takes place.

history

"70000 Tons of Metal" was first held in 2011. The venue for this so far largest metal festival on a ship from 2011 to 2014 was the cruise ship Majesty of the Seas . In 2015 the festival took place on the cruise ship Liberty of the Seas , in 2016 on the Independence of the Seas. The festival took place from Monday to Friday from 2011 to 2014, from Thursday to Monday in 2015 and 2016, with the route always leading from Miami ( Florida ) to a tourist destination in the Caribbean and back again. So far there have been 41 to 60 bands from different metal genres (twice each) per trip . Including the crew, there were between 3500 and 5300 people on board on the trips that have been carried out so far.

In August 2011, the organizers of the 70,000 Tons of Metal announced that they wanted to organize another festival on a cruise ship from December 3rd to 7th, 2012 with the Barge to Hell . Unlike the 70,000-ton trips, the Barge to Hell was only about 60% fully booked. The route led from Miami to Nassau in the Bahamas ; the musical focus was on extreme metal with the varieties thrash , death and black metal . With the established concept of engaging bands of different metal genres, the Majesty of the Seas set sail for the third time from January 28 to February 1, 2013 as part of the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise. In 2014 the event took place from January 27th to 31st. In 2015 it took place from January 22nd to 26th, 2016 from February 4th to 8th.

background

The initiator and organizer of the 70,000 Tons of Metal is the Swiss concert organizer Andy Piller. As a young adult he began to organize concerts in his former home town of Flums , which he eventually made into his profession. The idea for a metal festival on a ship came to Piller in 2006 when he was "dreaming a little longer after a cruise ship one evening" from the balcony of his apartment overlooking Vancouver's harbor. In the roughly four-year preparation phase, Piller took part in several regular cruises, found investors who supported the project with grants amounting to millions, and founded the company Ultimate Cruises , where he is a managing director ( CEO ).

The rumor that often emerged in 2010 that the 70,000 Tons only takes place once, Piller denied to the star :

"I didn't invest four years to make this thing unique."

- Andy Piller

He also emphasized that “there will be a next time and there will almost certainly be many afterwards”. After the debut event in January 2011, the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise took place a second time in January 2012. In January 2013, the 70,000 Tons of Metal took place again and ran from Miami to the Turks and Caicos Islands . In 2014 the route ran from Miami to Costa Maya in Mexico and back. In 2015 and 2016 it went from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Jamaica (Ocho Rios and Falmouth) and back.

This makes Piller the second organizer, alongside the established organizer Sixthman , to regularly offer music festivals on cruise ships.

Line-up and performance situation

Up to 60 bands appear at each festival, with no genre specialization. Therefore there are bands from all metal genres . The main stage on the Majesty of the Seas was the ship theater "A Chorus Line" on decks 5–7. On deck 8 there was a smaller stage in the "Spectrum" lounge and on deck 12 with the "Poolside Stage" also an open air stage. For the latter, a pool was specially drained and covered to make room for the audience. In 2011, the “Poolside Stage” was designed relatively sporadically, but since 2012 it has been designed much larger and more professional. At the Liberty of the Seas during the 2015 edition of the festival there was a total of four stages each on the pool deck, in the Platinum Theater, in Studio B - Ice Rink and in the Sphynx Lounge.

Accommodation and prices

In order to be able to visit the festival, it is primarily only necessary to book a cabin, which includes food, non-alcoholic and non-carbonated drinks and admission to all performances. The cheapest tickets (4-person inside stateroom, deck 2) cost $ 666 per person (2011), the most expensive (2-person grand suite with large balcony, deck 10) $ 2999 (2011) and $ 3333 (2012 and 2013) ), also per person. In addition, there is an additional $ 249 (2011) or $ 289 (2012 and 2013) per passenger for taxes, port fees and other administrative costs. In addition to the concerts, there is also a fitness studio, a casino , a basketball court and a climbing wall available for leisure activities . The "Pools Girls" have been involved as hostesses at the event since 2013 .

reception

At first, the shipping company and crew in 2011 were skeptical about the unusual travel audience. Due to the unexpectedly friendly and civil behavior of the guests and the economic success of the entire festival, however, the opinion changed fundamentally. The national and international (trade) press reported extensively in 2011 about the 70,000 Tons of Metal. In addition to the Metal Hammer , Stern , RTL , Norddeutsche Rundfunk and ZDF also reported on the event in great detail. In 2012, documentaries about the festival were produced by CNN , Sat.1 and 1 Live , among others . The most renowned formats that reported on the cruise in 2013 were Aardschok , Blick.ch , CNN, the Lingener Tagespost , Metal Hammer , Rock Hard , Spiegel Online and the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Since 2013, the full metal cruise cruises in the Baltic Sea have been carried out according to a comparable concept . To what extent the organizers were inspired by 70,000 Tons of Metal is unclear.
