Dragony is an Austrian power metal band from Vienna that also incorporates elements of symphonic metal into their style.

history

Formation of the band and first appearances

Dragony was founded in summer 2007 by guitarist Daniel Stockinger and singer Siegfried Samer. Daniel Stockinger previously worked for the Viennese metal band Omega Effect , Siegfried Samer as a singer in the power metal band Eleftheria, also from Vienna . Originally conceived as a pure studio project with a rock opera character, the band initially called itself The Dragonslayer Project . But after a full band line-up was quickly found with Andreas Poppernitsch (guitar), Herbert Glos (bass), Georg Lorenz (keyboard) and Frederic Brünner (drums), the decision was made to perform live as a band. After a few appearances in smaller clubs in Vienna, Dragony also completed their first concerts in 2008 as a support act for international bands such as Firewind and Paul Di'Anno . This was followed by other concerts in Vienna and the surrounding area, such as the Night of Power with Serenity, co-organized by Dragony, as well as appearances in the opening act for Axxis , Edenbridge and Sonata Arctica .

New name and debut album Legends

After the project had matured into a band, it was decided to give up the rock opera character in favor of a more traditional album and began recording the debut album in late 2010. This was taken as an opportunity to change the band name from the bulky The Dragonslayer Project to the more grippy Dragony . In early 2012 the band signed a record deal with the German metal label Limb Music and the debut album Legends , which was made with the participation of well-known musicians from the Austrian and international scene such as Thomas Buchberger from Serenity and Ralf Scheepers from Primal Fear , was finally released on June 22nd Released 2012 in Europe, August 8, 2012 in Japan, and August 14, 2012 in the United States. The album received positive reviews, for example the German Metal Hammer awarded 6 out of 7 points.

In 2012 the band returned to live activities and appeared as the local promoter of the Metal Nation 2012 tour of Primal Fear and Brainstorm as an opener. At Metalfest Austria 2012 the band made their first festival appearance, but the singer Siegfried Samer was unable to take over the lead vocals due to a vocal cord disease. Katie Joanne, singer of the Viennese progressive metal band Siren's Cry , stepped in as a replacement .

Lineupwechsel, Shadow Play and Lords Of The Hunt

In the summer of 2012 there were personnel changes in the band, as guitarist Daniel Stockinger and keyboardist Georg Lorenz left the band. In autumn 2012, Dragony celebrated its fifth anniversary with a concert with Freedom Call in Vienna. At the end of 2012 Manuel Hartleb (keyboard) and Simon Saito (guitar) were introduced as new permanent members of Dragony. Further support shows Blind Guardian and Powerwolf followed .

On July 3, 2015, the band released a first promo video clip for their second album Shadowplay , an 80s metal cover version of True Survivor by David Hasselhoff from the soundtrack to the Kickstarter film Kung Fury .

On August 28, 2015, the band released a lyric video for the new song Wolves of the North on YouTube, and on September 25, 2015, their second album, Shadowplay, was released via Limb Music.

To promote the album, Dragony went as an opening act with the German power metal band Gamma Ray on their 25-Years-in-Metal anniversary tour and performed in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria. In the spring of 2016 there were a few more festival appearances at the Alpine Steel Festival in Innsbruck, as well as at the Austrian festivals Nova Rock and the Donauinselfest . On April 7, 2017, an EP was released for the 10th anniversary of the band with the title Lords of the Hunt .

Crowdfunding and Masters of the Multiverse

In October 2017, the band started a crowdfunding campaign to finance the third studio album, which is due to be released in 2018. After summer shows together with Battle Beast and at the Masters of Rock Festival in the Czech Republic, the third album Masters Of The Multiverse was released on October 12, 2018 via Limb Music. The video for If It Bleeds We Can Kill It was published in advance on September 12, 2018 , the lyric video for Flame of Tar Valon on September 21, and a video for the song Defenders on October 4 .

To promote the album, Dragony went on a European tour in autumn 2018 with the Austrian symphonic metal acts Serenity and Visions of Atlantis as well as Temperance from Italy as part of the Symphonic Metal Nights IV , which included Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, France and Hungary led.

In early 2019, the band took part in the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise from Miami (USA) to Haiti, and in August 2019 also performed at the Wacken Open Air in Schleswig-Holstein.

Napalm Records and fourth album

After another crowdfunding campaign for the fourth album, it was confirmed on June 29, 2020 that Dragony had signed a new record deal with the Austrian label Napalm Records .
