Einherjer is a Norwegian Viking Metal band from Haugesund .

Band history

Einherjer was founded in January 1993 by Frode Glesnes (guitar) and Gerhard Storesund (drums) after their previous band Beelzebub had split up. Together with the singer Rune Bjelland and Audun Wold on the electric bass, the demo Aurora borealis with four pieces was recorded in the same year . A year later, the EP Leve Vikingånden, recorded in October 1994 in the Lydloftet studio , followed on Necromantic Gallery Productions. In 1996, Audun Wold switched from the electric bass to the electric guitar, with Stein Sund taking over the vacancy. With this line-up, the debut album Dragons of the North was released on Napalm Records , followed a year later by the single Far Far North on Century Media . In 1998, new members joined Einherjer with Ragnar Vikse as singer and Erik Elden on electric bass, after all but the founding members had left the band. In the same year the second album, Odin Owns Ye All, was released . Erik Elden left the band shortly after the recordings. In the next two years Tchort (including Green Carnation , Ex- Emperor , Carpathian Forest ), Jon Lind and once again Stein Sund were briefly bassists with Einherjer, from 2000 the post remained vacant. Aksel Herløe had already joined the band a year earlier as the second guitarist.

In 2000, the first demo Aurora borealis was re-released on Necropolis Records . In the same year the third album Norwegian Native Art was released . For this album, Frode Glesnes and Gerhard Storesund founded the label Native North Records together with Ragnar Vikse. The latter, however, left Einherjer soon afterwards. Two years later, three tracks under the title “Demo Recordings” were published on the band's website for free download. The band broke up in early 2004, a few months after their last album Blot was released . In December 2004, the last active members of Einherjer founded the thrash metal band Battered .

In 2009 Einherjer played reunion shows at the Ragnarök Festival , the Wacken Open Air and the Paganfest . At the end of the year they finally announced that they would be recording an album together again as Einherjer in 2010. September 9, 2011 was released under the label Indie Recordings with Norrøn 's fifth studio album.

style

The band combines elements of black metal with clear vocals, hymn-like choir voices and instruments typical of folk metal, such as the flute . An important influence for the band members was the album Twilight of the Gods of Bathory . The texts are partly in English and Norwegian and deal with topics from Nordic mythology and Vikings . The name Einherjer refers to the fallen warriors who, according to Germanic belief, are led by the Valkyries from the battlefield to his father Odin in Valhalla .
