Revocation is an extreme metal - band from Boston , Massachusetts (USA). The band was founded in 2000 by guitarist and singer David Davidson, bassist and singer Anthony Buda and drummer Phil Dubois-Coyne. The band was originally called Cryptic Warning , but changed its name in 2006. They have released five studio albums so far and are under contract with Metal Blade Records .

history

In 2000 David Davidson, Phil Dubois-Coyne and Anthony Buda formed the band Cryptic Warning , which was heavily influenced by Guns n 'Roses and Metallica . They recorded the first demo in 2002 and played their first concerts in Boston and outside of Massachusetts. A second demo Internally Reviled was recorded in 2004. In 2005, Cryptic Warning recorded their debut album, Sanity's Aberration , but the quality of this recording was not yet very good. Recalling those recordings, Davidson said, “We didn't record this album with someone who liked metal, so we didn't get the sound we wanted either. The biggest reference in our producer's discography was The Cult . Lots of our fans love these recordings - our old school fans who are always with our shows - but we weren't actually happy with the production of this recording. It felt like a mistake. "

The band decided to change their name to Revocation in 2006; Davidson: “I think if you look at it more closely, we made a lot of mistakes with Cryptic Warning. We were younger and we didn't really know what we were doing, so Revocation was like a fresh start and we got our old mistakes back on track. ”After a change in production, Revocation recorded a three-song demo called Summon the Spawn and in 2008 they left back to the studio and recorded their first studio album, Empire of the Obscene . The album was released without the help of a label, and the band also financed their own tour, which attracted interest from various labels. Revocation signed a contract with Relapse Records .

The band played a few regional concerts before recording their second album Existence Is Futile , which was released on September 29, 2009. The album was named "one of the best pure metal albums in 2009" by Allmusic , while Spin magazine named Revocation one of the bands to keep an eye on in 2010. In October 2009 the band played in the CMJ Music Marathon .

In 2012 founding member Anthony Buda decided to leave the band to devote himself to new projects. His successor in the band is Brett Bamberger.

Style, influence and reception

Revocation's music has been described by journalists as a fusion of technical death metal and thrash metal . Characteristic of the band was "the complex interplay of guitar and bass" with dissonant riffs, bass - Breaks and shredding guitar solos , coupled with a "galloping" Double Bass . Also characteristic is a speed which would otherwise in death metal is common, hard rock - Breakdowns and grooves . The singing ranges from death growls to grindcore - Screams , but it was "still recognizable as a human voice."

Music critics point out that guitarist Davidson's style is an important aspect of the sound of Revocation. The Exclaim! -Magazine described Davidson's agile guitar playing as follows: "Usually most bands with mechanical flair and over-the-top solos are interesting for just three seconds. That's as long as it takes to understand that some guitarist dominates the band with his youth He spent masturbation instead of doing something with others and now he's using his talent to impress other guitarists (whose guitars have six strings). " Davidson developed his playing technique by going to Berklee College of Music , where he specialized in polyrhythmics for jazz . This brought him proficiency in playing and songwriting while "some atonal aspects of jazz gave him a different perspective on composing and the guitar solos."

Davidson names Slash , Dimebag Darrell , and Marty Friedman as his main influences. According to Davidson, the band has a wide range of influences, including bands like Exhorder , Dark Angel , Megadeth , Pestilence , Atheist , Gorguts , Forbidden , Spastic Ink , Martyr , and Exodus .

When it comes to the band's rhythm, critics are divided; while, according to About.com, Buda and Dubois-Coyne "play their own brutal brand of instant stopping precision combined with ruthless intensity," Decibel magazine commented on Davidson's solos that "the rest of the band fail at it to compensate for this. " Contrary to these opinions, Allmusic says : "Perhaps the most amazing thing about Revocation is that they are a trio."
