Martyr is a progressive death metal band formed in 1994 in Trois-Rivières , Québec , Canada by François and Daniel Mongrain.

history

Martyr was founded in 1994 by the brothers François (vocals, bass) and Daniel Mongrain (vocals, guitar), as well as Stephane Belanger (drums) and Pier-Luc Lampron. In September 1995 the demo Ostrogoth was released. In May 1997 the debut album Hopeless Hopes was recorded. After the recordings, Patrice Hamelin joined the group as the new drummer. At the end of the year Hopeless Hopes was released as an in-house production.

In 1999 the album Warp Zone followed on an independent label . Gorguts singer Luc Lemay was a guest on the album produced by Pierre Rémillard . In 2001 an appearance in Rouyn was recorded and released as a live album entitled Extracting the Core on the Skyscraper Music label. In 2002 Martin Carbonneau started as a guitarist. Between 2003 and 2005 Martyr recorded the album Feeding the Abscess , but it was not released until 2006 on Galy Records, Martyr's new record company. Jean-Yves “Blacky” Thériault from Voivod can be heard on a cover version of his old group. At the same time, the first two albums were remastered and re-released.

In 2008, a DVD entitled Havoc was released in Quebec City .

Daniel Mongrain also appeared as a guitarist with Capharnaum and Gorguts , and as a live musician with Voivod. His brother François Mongrain is the bass player for the Ex Deo project . He was also a member of the Kataklysm session .

style

Their music is stylistically reminiscent of bands such as Cynic and Death and is characterized by sophisticated arrangements. The lyrics of the songs are in English , although the band comes from a Francophone province of Canada.
