Keep of Kalessin is a metal band from Norway . The band name refers to Kalessin, the oldest dragon in the novels of the Earth Sea cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin .
history
Keep of Kalessin was founded in 1994 by Arnt Ove “Obsidian Claw” Gronbech and Ghash under the name “Ildskjaer” in Trondheim . The band combines elements of black and power metal . A little later Vyl and Warach joined the band. The Erdsee cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin not only served as a template for the band name, but also inspired the band in their musical work.
In 1995 they recorded their first demo, Skygger av Sorg , which sold very little. The band received a contract with the Italian label Avantgarde Music. Her debut album Through Times and War was released in 1997.
Her second album Agnen: A Journey Through the Dark was also recorded at Brygga Studios. In 2006 the third studio album Armada was released by the Swedish record company Tabu Recordings. In early 2008, Keep of Kalessin signed with Nuclear Blast . Shortly afterwards, the fourth studio album Kolossus was released. At the end of 2008 the band toured supporting Morbid Angel , Kataklysm and Marduk .
In 2010 the band took part with the song Dragontower at the Melodi Grand Prix , the Norwegian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . There are no Black Metal elements to be found in this song, the fans of the band reacted mostly negatively to this song. The associated album Reptilian described the band, according to a sticker on the album cover, as Epic Extreme Metal. Reptilian was the last album with Thebon as a singer. Obsidian took on vocals and guitar, and Keep of Kalessin acted as the trio.
In 2015 the 6th studio album Epistemology was released, which has a much more melodic vocals than its predecessors.
In March 2019, Nechtan from the German band Craving became the drummer for Keep of Kalessin.
