Soen is a multinational rock - and Metal - supergroup , founded of 2004.

history

The band was founded in 2004 by the drummer Martin Lopez (ex- Opeth , Amon Amarth ) and the guitarist Kim Platbarzdis. The name of the band goes back to Lopez, whereby this should not evoke images in the mind of the fans, so that one can concentrate completely on the music. Plans to found a band had existed since 2003, but this was hardly possible for Lopez due to his activity with Opeth. After leaving Opeth, he and Platbarzdis moved abroad. As a result, it was not possible for both of them to continue devoting themselves to Soen, which is why the project paused shortly after it was founded. In early 2010 the singer Joel Ekelöf (ex- Willowtree ) and bassist Steve DiGiorgio ( Sadus , Testament , ex- Death , Iced Earth ) completed the line-up. The debut album Cognitive followed in February 2012 on Spinefarm Records . The sound carrier was mixed by David Bottrill and mastered by João Carvalho. Music videos were also created for the songs Savia and Ideate . On the second album Tellurian , which was also released on Spinefarm Records in November 2014, Stefan Stenberg is represented as bassist. In July of the same year the group played at the Metaldays Festival in Tolmin, Slovenia . In 2015 they went on a European tour . In October of the same year the group also played on ProgPower Europe .

style

According to Aapatsos at progarchives.com , Cognitive has similarities with Tool . For Tellurian , the band processed more influences. In addition, she is more experimental and goes more towards alternative rock and metal with noticeable Opeth influences. In an interview with Thanos from grande-rock.com , Martin Lopez stated that he would write the basic structure of the songs before the other members would do their part. The group was influenced by Tool. Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer assigned the band to Progressive Metal and described the music as a mixture of Tool, Porcupine Tree and A Perfect Circle . In an interview with Weckmann, Lopez confirmed that these bands are influences from Soen. Weckmann also wrote that the group incorporated elements from world music . Petra Schurer had reviewed the album Cognitive an issue earlier . At the beginning of the album, the group can still be compared to Tool, although they differ from this in the further course of the album. Ekelöf is more of a narrator than a singer in the songs. In a later edition, Katrin Riedl discussed the Tellurian album and made a comparison with Anathema , Opeth and Tool. The album is "a structure of melancholy, dark sounds". The music is progressive and technically demanding, but still catchy. Compared to dark metal albums by bands like Ghost Brigade , there are no rough edges.
